Open Society

Our work with the Czech public aims to eliminate prejudice, strengthen tolerance and combat existing xenophobia and racism. We introduce the majority of society to the lived experiences of migrants, share their stories and explain the obstacles they face in their everyday life in a foreign country.

Programme in numbers:

  • More than 2,500 pupils/students have been involved in our intercultural programme for primary and secondary schools, which develops empathy, respect and understanding of migration through personal experience.
  • Since 2020, we have made a significant contribution to building methodological support for schools and have advocated for the introduction of intercultural assistants in schools.
  • Since 2020, 120+ pupils with a different mother tongue have been supported through online tutoring.
  • We have engaged municipalities and regions in integration through training of officials, networking with key actors and practical support; the result is the Local Integration Manual and Local Policies on Migrant Integration and their structural mechanisms to help municipalities and regions integrate migrants.
  • We regularly organise dozens of community events, including multicultural evenings and cooking classes, which contribute to deeper intercultural understanding.

Objectives

Our aim is to raise public awareness and education in the field of migration and integration. We aim to contribute to a better understanding of this topic and to promote the perception of migration as a natural and enriching part of society. We strive to support the integration of migrants through the development of their skills and positive experiences. At the same time, we focus on creating an objective and realistic portrayal of migration and integration in the media and on ensuring that the voices of migrants are heard in the public space.

In order to meet the objectives and achieve the results, we focus, among others, on the following activities:

  • Organisation of talks in primary and secondary schools, creation of intercultural programmes and educational materials aimed at understanding migration and developing empathy
  • Professional seminars for the public and local institutions, preparation of publications, analyses, methodologies and trainings focused on intercultural competences and working with migrant women/youth
  • Online tutoring for multilingual pupils with trained volunteers
  • Educational workshops for migrants focusing on key topics of everyday life in the Czech Republic
  • Community events, including multicultural evenings, intercultural picnics, cooking classes or film screenings followed by discussions aimed at strengthening intercultural dialogue
