Health insurance
Health insurance is mandatory for everyone. The health care system is based on the principle of solidarity, which means that everyone contributes and everyone has the right to health care.
From the moment a special visa or temporary protection is issued, your insurance will be paid by the state for a period of 150 days and, if specific conditions are met, up to 30 days retroactively from the date of submitting the application for temporary protection. You will then have to pay health insurance premiums from your own funds as a self-payer, or register with the Labor Office as a job seeker. Registration with the Labor Office is not mandatory. However, if you are registered with the Labor Office as a job seeker, you do not have to pay for health insurance for the period of registration. If you are officially employed, your employer pays for health insurance.
For persons of retirement age, persons who are personally caring for at least one child under 7 years of age, or at least two children under 15 years of age, and minor children, the state will pay health insurance even after 150 days.
For more information about health insurance, visit the VZP website, the Metropole všech website.
How do I get a health insurance certificate?
After granting/extending temporary protection, it is necessary to visit any branch of the General Health Insurance Company (VZP) within 5 days and collect a “Replacement Insurance Card”. Simply apply for a new insurance card using the online form no later than 5 working days after the extension of temporary protection.
In case you need urgent medical care before the insurance certificate is issued, it should be enough for you to show a valid travel document and visa sticker with the granted/extended temporary protection to the doctor.
With health insurance, all medical assistance will be provided to you free of charge.
